First Grade STEM in Action!

Our first graders recently explored the important job of air traffic controllers. They learned how controllers communicate with pilots and guide airplanes safely. For their project, students imagined a situation where the radio was down and controllers needed another way to communicate with pilots.

Students designed their own methods for sending signals to planes to tell them to land, don’t land, turn left, and turn right. They tested their designs during the day and at “night” to see how clearly their signals could be seen.

To wrap up the project, students visited the Pickens County Airport where they shared their creative designs and learning. They also had fun enjoying the playground and celebrating their hard work with ice cream from The Scoop.

It was an exciting way to connect STEM learning with real-world problem solving!
